Using an uplink grant as trigger of first or second type of CQI report

A user equipment, UE, for providing channel state feedback from the UE to a base station, the UE comprising:

• processing circuitry configured to:
• determine whether the UE has received an uplink grant from the base station;
• and
• transmit a first type of channel state feedback information to the base station on a granted resource upon determining that the UE has received an uplink grant, and a second type of channel state feedback information on a dedicated resource upon determining that the UE has not received an uplink grant, wherein said second type of channel state feedback information is transmitted in a format comprising fewer bits than a format of the first type.

A method in a base station having a scheduler for obtaining channel state feedback information from a user equipment, UE, the method comprising the steps of:

• determining whether channel state feedback information is required;
• generating an uplink grant when channel state feedback information is required;
• providing the generated uplink grant to the UE in order to receive the channel state feedback information on a granted resource;
• receiving a first type of channel state feedback information on the granted resource when the uplink grant has been transmitted to the UE;
• and
• receiving a second type of channel state feedback information on a dedicated resource when the uplink grant has not been transmitted to the UE, wherein said second type of channel state feedback information is transmitted in a format comprising fewer bits than a format of the first type.

A base station having a scheduler for obtaining channel state feedback information from a user equipment, UE, the base station comprising:

• processing circuitry configured to:
• determine whether channel state feedback information is required, and generate an uplink grant in order to receive channel state feedback information from the UE on a granted resource upon determining that channel state feedback information is required;
• transmit the uplink grant to the UE;
• and
• receive channel state feedback information, wherein a first type of channel state feedback information is received on the granted resource when the uplink grant has been transmitted to the UE, and wherein a second type of channel state feedback information is received on a dedicated resource when the uplink grant has not been transmitted to the UE, wherein said second type of channel state feedback information is transmitted in a format comprising fewer bits than a format of the first type.
