Abstract
A method comprises rubbing a powder comprising titanium dioxide particles against a surface of an aluminum substrate to form a layer bonded to the surface of the aluminum substrate. The powder comprises titanium dioxide and is essentially free of organic particles. Composite articles preparable by the method are also disclosed.

A method comprising rubbing a powder comprising titanium dioxide particles against a surface of an aluminum substrate to form a layer bonded to the surface of the aluminum substrate, wherein the powder is essentially free of organic particles, and wherein the layer comprises titanium dioxide.
A composite article comprising a layer bonded to a surface of a substrate, wherein the layer comprises titanium dioxide and elemental titanium, wherein the layer is essentially free of organic components, and wherein the substrate comprises aluminum metal.
