Abstract
The invention provides novel gold nanoclusters of the formula Au20(SR)15(weak ligand), wherein each R is independently an organic group, and the weak ligand is a weakly associating gold ligand of Formula I as described herein. The nanocluster can have an approximate molecular weight of 6 kDa. Corresponding dimers of the nanocluster can have an approximate molecular weight of 10 kDa (by SEC). The invention also provides methods of making and using the gold nanoclusters.
Claims21
A gold nanocluster of the formula Aux(SR)y(weak ligand), wherein x is 20-28, y is 15, 17, or 19, each R is independently an organic group comprising 1-30 carbon atoms covalently bound to the sulfur atom, and the weak ligand is a weakly associating gold ligand of Formula I:
- wherein
- X is O, S, CH2, NH, or PH;
- R1 and R2 are each independently OH, OMe, OEt, SH, SMe, SEt, NH2, NHMe, NMe2, NHEt, NEt2, PH2, PHMe, PMe2, PHEt, or PEt2;
- and
- n is 1, 2, 3, 4, or about 5 to about 50;
- and
- wherein the nanocluster has an approximate molecular weight of 6 kDa and is yellow in color upon isolation.
A gold nanocluster of the formula Au20(SC2H4Ph)15(diethylene glycol dimethyl ether), wherein the nanocluster has an approximate molecular weight of 6 kDa and is yellow in color upon isolation.
A gold nanocluster of the formula Au25(SG)17(diethylene glycol dimethyl ether), wherein SG is the thiolate of glutathione, and the nanocluster has an approximate molecular weight of 6 kDa and is yellow in color upon isolation.
A gold nanocluster of the formula Aux(SR)y(weak ligand), wherein x is 20, 24, 25, or 28, y is 15, 17, or 19, each R is independently an organic group comprising 1-30 carbon atoms covalently bound to the sulfur atom, and the weak ligand is a weakly associating gold ligand of Formula I:
- wherein
- X is O, S, CH2, NH, or PH;
- R1 and R2 are each independently OH, OMe, OEt, SH, SMe, SEt, NH2, NHMe, NMe2, NHEt, NEt2, PH2, PHMe, PMe2, PHEt, or PEt2;
- and
- n is 1, 2, 3, 4, or about 5 to about 50;
- and
- wherein the nanocluster has an approximate molecular weight of 6 kDa and is yellow in color upon isolation.
