Media content playback system and method

A media apparatus for selecting a media source to provide media content to a playback device that plays back the media content as at least one of audio and video content, the apparatus comprising:

• a controller programmed to:
• detect a media zone that includes a playback device;
• detect a presence of a portable user device that provides the media content to the playback device;
• determine a number of media sources that are available in the media zone;
• select a first media source of the number of media sources based on a hierarchy table;
• and
• control the first media source to provide the media content to the playback device instead of the portable user device.

A non-transitory computer-readable medium tangibly embodying computer-executable instructions of a software program, the software program being executable by a processor of a computing device to provide operations, comprising:

• detecting a media zone that includes a playback device;
• detecting a presence of a portable user device that provides the media content to the playback device;
• determining a number of media sources that are available in the media zone;
• selecting a first media source of the number of media sources based on a hierarchy table;
• and
• controlling the first media source to provide the media content to the playback device instead of the portable user device.
