A recipient device comprising a processing manager configured to process a communication from a source to the recipient device in a system;

• the processing manager configured to access an association database maintaining a network address book, and to compare a contact list of the source with a contact list of the recipient device on the network address book in order to determine whether the source is associated with the recipient device when the source initiates a communication to the recipient device;
• wherein if the source is associated with the recipient device, the recipient device displays an established identifier of the source, and
• wherein if the source is not associated with the recipient device, the system is operable to determine privacy settings of the recipient device, and if determined privacy settings of the recipient device allow the recipient device to accept a communication from outside the recipient device's social network, the system is operable to determine how an identifier of the recipient device was derived on the source, and establish a route between the source and the recipient device based at least upon information associated with how the identifier of the recipient device was derived on the source.
