Transmission diversity and multiplexing for HARQ-ACK signals in communication systems

A user equipment (UE) for transmitting acknowledgement information for a physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) to a base station, the UE comprising:

• a selector for identifying, a first uplink control channel resource based on a first control channel element (CCE) used to transmit a physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) corresponding to the PDSCH, and for identifying a second uplink control channel resource based on the first CCE+1, for a transmission mode that supports up to two transport blocks (TBs);
• and
• a transmitter for transmitting the acknowledgement information on one of the first uplink control channel resource and the second uplink control channel resource,
• wherein the first uplink control channel resource and the second uplink control channel resource are associated with a first cell.

A method for a base station to receive acknowledgement information, the method comprising:

• determining a first uplink control channel resource based on a first control channel element (CCE) used to transmit a physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) corresponding to a physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH);
• determining a second uplink control channel resource based on the first CCE+1, for a transmission mode that supports up to two transport blocks (TBs);
• and
• receiving the acknowledgement information on one of the first uplink control channel resource and the second uplink control channel resource,
• wherein the first uplink control channel resource and the second uplink control channel resource are associated with a first cell.

An apparatus for receiving acknowledgement information in a communication system, the apparatus comprising:

• a transmitter configured to transmit a physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) corresponding to a physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH);
• and
• a receiver configured to receive acknowledgement information,
• wherein acknowledgement information is received on one of a first uplink control channel resource and a second uplink control channel resource, the first uplink control channel resource is acquired based on a first control channel element (CCE) used to transmit the PDCCH, for a transmission mode that supports up to two transport blocks (TBs), the second uplink control channel resource is acquired based on the first CCE+1,
• wherein the first uplink control channel resource and the second uplink control channel resource are associated with a first cell.
