Abstract
Compositions comprising peptides that are capable of binding a metal are disclosed. Such compositions can be used for binding metal in a variety of contexts and environments. In various embodiments, peptides are used for antioxidant activity, anti-inflammatory activity, anti-pain therapy, as chemical reagents, and/or as superoxide dismutase mimics.
Claims78
A method of treating a defect in superoxide dismutase in a subject in need thereof, the method comprising administering to the subject a therapeutically-effective amount of:
- i) a peptide comprising a sequence XC1C2, wherein X is any natural or non-natural amino acid or amino acid analog, and further wherein C1 and C2 are each individually a sulfur-containing amino acid, wherein the peptide comprises at least 20 amino acids;
- and
- ii) a metal bound to the peptide.
A method of reducing pain in a subject in need thereof, the method comprising administering to the subject a therapeutically-effective amount of:
- i) a peptide comprising a sequence XC1C2, wherein X is any natural or non-natural amino acid or amino acid analog, and further wherein C1 and C2 are each individually a sulfur-containing amino acid, wherein the peptide comprises at least 20 amino acids;
- and
- ii) a metal bound to the peptide.
A method of reducing inflammation in a subject in need thereof, the method comprising administering to the subject a therapeutically-effective amount of:
- i) a peptide comprising a sequence XC1C2, wherein X is any natural or non-natural amino acid or amino acid analog, and further wherein C1 and C2 are each individually a sulfur-containing amino acid, wherein the peptide comprises at least 20 amino acids;
- and
- ii) a metal bound to the peptide.
