Abstract
Compositions having antimicrobial activity contain surface functionalized particles comprising a copper salt which has low water solubility. The compositions may be added to the articles of manufacture to provide antimicrobial properties. The articles of manufacture include liquid and solid products. These liquids or solids include dispersions, creams, gels, coatings and any thermoplastic or thermosetting, polymer components.
Claims25
A copper releasing composition having antimicrobial activity comprising:
- (a) particles of at least one of copper iodide and copper bromide wherein the surfaces of said particles are modified by at least one functionalizing agent with a molecular weight of at least 60;
- (b) the said particles have antimicrobial activity by release of ions as the said particles or a matrix in which the said particles are incorporated contacts a microbial environment;
- and
- (c) the said composition when tested in suspension at a concentration of 59 ppm Cu reduces the population of S. aureus by greater than 2 logs (log10) in 2 hours.
A copper releasing composition having antimicrobial activity comprising:
- a. particles containing 51 weight percent or more of at least one copper halide salt selected from the group consisting of CuI, CuBr and CuCl;
- b. wherein the surfaces of the said particles are modified by at least one functionalizing agent;
- c. the said functionalizing agent provides the composition with increased antimicrobial activity;
- d. the said particles have antimicrobial activity by release of ions as the said particles or a matrix in which the said particles are incorporated contacts a microbial environment;
- and
- e. the said composition when tested in suspension at a concentration of 59 ppm Cu reduces the population of S. aureus by greater than 2 logs (log10) in 2 hours.
A copper releasing composition having antimicrobial activity comprising:
- a. solid particles containing at least 51 weight percent of at least one copper salt selected from the group consisting of cuprous oxide, cuprous thiocyanate, CuI, CuBr and CuCl;
- b. wherein the surfaces of the said particles are modified by at least one functionalizing agent and the said functionalizing agent has a molecular weight of at least 60;
- c. the weight ratio of the said functionalizing agent to the said particles is between 1:100 to 20:1;
- d. the said particles have antimicrobial activity by release of ions as the said particles or a matrix in which the said particles are incorporated contacts a microbial environment;
- and
- e. the said composition when tested in suspension at a concentration of 59 ppm Cu reduces the population of S. aureus by greater than 2 logs (log10) in 2 hours.
A copper releasing composition having antimicrobial activity comprising particles containing at least 51% by weight of an inorganic copper salt with a room temperature water solubility of less than 100 mg/liter wherein the surfaces of said particles are modified by at least one functionalizing agent with a molecular weight of at least 60, said particles have antimicrobial activity by release of ions as the said particles or a matrix in which the said particles are incorporated contacts a microbial environment and the said composition when tested in suspension at a concentration of 59 ppm Cu reduces the population of S. aureus by greater than 2 logs (log10) in 2 hours.
