Apparatus for measuring volume of a fluid

An apparatus for measuring volume of a fluid, comprising:

• at least one emitter configured to project a signal toward a predetermined position of a sample container;
• at least one receiver configured to receive the signal after the signal interacts with the sample container, wherein a change in the signal received by the at least one receiver indicates when the fluid has dropped below the predetermined position;
• and
• a fluid transfer device in communication with the at least one receiver and sample container,
• wherein the apparatus determines a volume of fluid that the fluid transfer device has removed from the sample container when the at least one receiver detects that the fluid has dropped below the predetermined position,
• wherein the at least one emitter includes first and second light emitters that reside on opposing sides of the sample container to be able to project a respective light signal toward and in line with each other, and wherein the at least one receiver includes first and second infrared (IR) receivers that reside under the sample container on different sides of a longitudinally extending centerline of the sample container, wherein the first IR receiver receives the light signal projected from the first emitter and the second IR receiver receives the light signal projected from the second emitter when the fluid has dropped below the predetermined position and the projected signals interact with the sample container to turn 90 degrees before being received by the respective IR receivers.

An apparatus for measuring volume of a fluid, comprising:

• at least one emitter configured to project a signal toward a predetermined position of a sample container;
• at least one receiver configured to receive the signal after the signal interacts with the sample container, wherein a change in the signal received by the at least one receiver indicates when the fluid has dropped below the predetermined position;
• and
• a fluid transfer device in communication with the at least one receiver and sample container,
• wherein the apparatus determines a volume of fluid that the fluid transfer device has removed from the sample container when the at least one receiver detects that the fluid has dropped below the predetermined position,
• wherein the fluid transfer device comprises a pipette tip with a pipette head sealably attached to a flexible barrier that seals off an interior of a container with the sample container held inside the container, and wherein the pipette head receives a pipette head adapter of a robotic arm that releasably engages a robotic arm, wherein, in operation, the robotic arm moves the pipette tip up and down and across a space inside the container while the container remains sealed.

An apparatus for measuring volume of a fluid, comprising:

• at least one light source for emitting light;
• at least one receiver for receiving light from the light source, the at least one receiver residing below the at least one light source;
• a cuvette residing proximate the at least one light source and the at least one receiver through which a change in a light path, dependent upon whether the cuvette contains fluid or is empty, can be detected by the at least one receiver, wherein the at least one light source resides adjacent a side of the cuvette and is configured to project the signal across the sample container, and wherein the at least one receiver resides under the cuvette;
• and
• a fluid transfer device in communication with the at least one receiver, wherein the apparatus determines a volume of fluid that has been removed from the cuvette by the fluid transfer device when the receiver detects signal identifying that the cuvette is empty or substantially empty.

An apparatus for measuring volume of a fluid, comprising:

• at least one light source for emitting light;
• at least one receiver for receiving light from the light source;
• a cuvette residing proximate the at least one light source and the at least one receiver through which a change in a light path, dependent upon whether the cuvette contains fluid or is empty, can be detected by the at least one receiver;
• and
• a fluid transfer device in communication with the at least one receiver, wherein the apparatus determines a volume of fluid that has been removed from the cuvette by the fluid transfer device when the at least one receiver detects signal identifying that the cuvette is empty or substantially empty,
• wherein the at least one light source includes first and second light sources that reside on opposing sides of the cuvette to be able to project a light signal toward and in line with each other, and wherein the at least one receiver includes first and second infrared (IR) receivers that reside under the cuvette on different sides of a longitudinally extending centerline of the cuvette, wherein the first IR receiver receives light signal projected from the first light source and the second IR receiver receives light signal projected from the second light source when fluid in the cuvette has dropped sufficiently low so that the projected light signals interact with the cuvette to turn 90 degrees before being received by a respective IR receiver.

An apparatus for measuring volume of a fluid, comprising:

• at least one light source for emitting light;
• at least one receiver for receiving light from the light source;
• a cuvette residing proximate the at least one light source and the at least one receiver through which a change in a light path, dependent upon whether the cuvette contains fluid or is empty, can be detected by the at least one receiver;
• and
• a fluid transfer device in communication with the at least one receiver, wherein the apparatus determines a volume of fluid that has been removed from the cuvette by the fluid transfer device when the at least one receiver detects that the cuvette is empty or substantially empty,
• wherein the fluid transfer device comprises a pipette tip with a pipette head sealably attached to a flexible barrier that seals off an interior of a container with the cuvette held inside the container, and wherein the pipette head receives a pipette head adapter of a robotic arm that releasably engages a robotic arm, wherein, in operation, the robotic arm moves the pipette tip up and down and across a space inside the container while the container remains sealed.

An apparatus for measuring volume of a fluid, comprising:

• at least one light source for emitting light;
• at least one receiver for receiving light from the light source, the at least one receiver residing below the at least one light source;
• a cuvette residing proximate the at least one light source and the at least one receiver through which a change in a light path, dependent upon whether the cuvette contains fluid or is empty, can be detected by the at least one receiver;
• a fluid transfer device in communication with the at least one receiver, wherein the apparatus determines a volume of fluid that has been removed from the cuvette by the fluid transfer device when the receiver detects signal identifying that the cuvette is empty or substantially empty;
• and
• a detector block configured to hold a lower end portion of the sample container, the detector block comprising at least one horizontally extending signal channel and at least one vertically extending cooperating signal channel, wherein the at least one emitter is configured to project the signal through the at least one horizontally extending channel, and wherein the at least one receiver is configured to receive signal from the at least one vertical channel when the fluid has dropped below the predetermined position.

An apparatus for measuring volume of a fluid, comprising:

• at least one emitter configured to project a signal toward a predetermined position of a sample container;
• at least one receiver configured to receive the signal after the signal interacts with the sample container, wherein the at least one receiver resides below the at least one emitter and under the sample container, and wherein a change in the signal received by the receiver indicates when the fluid has dropped below the predetermined position;
• a fluid transfer device in communication with the receiver and sample container,
• wherein the apparatus determines a volume of fluid that the fluid transfer device has removed from the sample container when the at least one receiver detects that the fluid has dropped below the predetermined position, wherein the at least one emitter comprises a first emitter and a second emitter, and wherein the at least one receiver comprises a first receiver and a second receiver;
• and
• a detector block having an open center region configured to hold a lower end portion of the sample container, the detector block comprising:
• a first signal channel and a second signal channel, the second signal channel residing across from and aligned with the first signal channel with lower end portion of the sample container in the open center region therebetween,
• a third signal channel configured to cooperate with the first signal channel;
• and
• a fourth signal channel configured to cooperate with the second signal channel, the third and fourth signal channels extend downwardly below the sample container, wherein the first emitter is configured to project the signal through the first signal channel, the second emitter is configured to project the signal through the second signal channel, and wherein, when fluid in the sample container is below the predetermined position, the first receiver is configured to receive signal from the third channel and the second receiver is configured to receive signal from the fourth channel.

An apparatus for measuring volume of a fluid, comprising:

• at least one light source for emitting light;
• at least one receiver for receiving light from the light source, the at least one receiver residing below the at least one light source;
• a cuvette residing proximate the at least one light source and the at least one receiver through which a change in a light path, dependent upon whether the cuvette contains fluid or is empty, can be detected by the at least one receiver;
• a fluid transfer device in communication with the at least one receiver, wherein the apparatus determines a volume of fluid that has been removed from the cuvette by the fluid transfer device when the receiver detects signal identifying that the cuvette is empty or substantially empty;
• and
• a detector block configured to hold a lower end portion of the cuvette, the detector block comprising at least one horizontally extending signal channel and at least one vertically extending cooperating signal channel, wherein the at least one light source is configured to emit light signal through the at least one horizontally extending channel, and wherein, when liquid in the cuvette falls below a predetermined position, the at least one receiver is configured to receive light signal from the at least one vertical channel thereby indicating that the cuvette is empty or substantially empty.

An apparatus for measuring volume of a fluid, comprising:

• at least one light source for emitting light;
• at least one receiver for receiving light from the light source, the at least one receiver residing below the at least one light source;
• a cuvette residing proximate the at least one light source and the at least one receiver through which a change in a light path, dependent upon whether the cuvette contains fluid or is empty, can be detected by the at least one receiver;
• a fluid transfer device in communication with the at least one receiver, wherein the apparatus determines a volume of fluid that has been removed from the cuvette by the fluid transfer device when the receiver detects signal identifying that the cuvette is empty or substantially empty, wherein the cuvette has an interior liquid channel that tapers down in size to a closed lower end;
• and
• a detector block that holds the lower end of the cuvette, the detector block comprising a first laterally extending light channel and a first downwardly extending cooperating light channel, wherein a respective at least one light source is configured to project a light signal through the first channel, and wherein a respective at least one receiver is configured to receive signal from the at least one downwardly extending channel.

An apparatus for measuring volume of a fluid, comprising:

• at least one light source for emitting light;
• at least one receiver for receiving light from the light source, the at least one receiver residing below the at least one light source;
• a cuvette residing proximate the at least one light source and the at least one receiver through which a change in a light path, dependent upon whether the cuvette contains fluid or is empty, can be detected by the at least one receiver;
• a fluid transfer device in communication with the at least one receiver, wherein the apparatus determines a volume of fluid that has been removed from the cuvette by the fluid transfer device when the receiver detects signal identifying that the cuvette is empty or substantially empty,
• wherein the at least one light source comprises a first infrared (IR) light source and a second IR light source, and wherein the at least one receiver comprises a first receiver and a second receiver, the apparatus further comprising a detector block having an open center region configured to hold a lower end portion of the cuvette, the detector block comprising:
• a first signal channel and a second signal channel, the second signal channel residing across from and aligned with the first signal channel with the lower end portion of the cuvette in the open center region therebetween,
• a third signal channel configured to cooperate with the first signal channel;
• and
• a fourth signal channel configured to cooperate with the second signal channel, the third and fourth signal channels extend downwardly below the cuvette,
• wherein the first IR light source is configured to project a respective light signal through the first signal channel, the second IR light source is configured to project a respective light signal through the second signal channel, and wherein when liquid in the cuvette falls below the first and second signal channels, the first receiver is configured to receive signal from the third channel and the second receiver is configured to receive signal from the fourth channel.
