Abstract
A composition is provided for use as a friction modifier for an automatic transmission, which comprises a condensation product of a hydroxypolycarbox-ylic acid, such as 2,3-di-hydroxybutanedioic acid or 2-hydroxybutanedioic acid, with an N,N-di(hydrocarbyl)alkylenediamine, where each hydrocarbyl group contains 1 to 22 carbon atoms, provided that the total number of carbon atoms in the two hydrocarbyl groups is at least about 9, and the alkylene group contains 2 to 4 carbon atoms.
Claims8
A method for lubricating an automatic transmission, comprising supplying thereto:
- (a) an oil of lubricating viscosity and
- (b) a composition comprising a condensation product of a hydroxy-polycarboxylic acid or mixtures thereof or a reactive equivalent thereof, with an N,N-di(hydrocarbyl) alkylenediamine;
- wherein the condensation product comprises a material represented by
- or mixtures thereof;
- wherein each of R1, R2, R3, and R4 is independently an alkyl group of 1 to about 22 carbon atoms, provided that the total number of carbon atoms in R1 and R2 is at least about 13 and the total number of carbon atoms in R3 and R4 is at least about 13.
