Methods and systems for an exhaust gas treatment system

A system, comprising:

• an engine with an exhaust passage;
• an exhaust treatment system disposed in the exhaust passage including at least a particulate filter;
• and
• a controller including non-transitory instructions to increase a temperature of exhaust gas from the engine to a first temperature when an amount of hydrocarbons exceeds a threshold amount and the engine is under extended cold idle conditions;
• to increase the temperature of the exhaust gas to a second, higher temperature after a predetermined first duration;
• and to increase the temperature of the exhaust gas to the second temperature responsive to a regeneration request when the engine is not under extended cold idle conditions.
