Low cost LED driver with improved serial bus

A light emitting diode (LED) driver system comprising:

• one or more LED strings in a video display, each of the one or more LED strings associated with a channel;
• a serial lighting interface (SLI) bus including a channel prefix register, a function register, a data register, and an input to receive data identifying one of the channels, data identifying a function within the one of the channels, and data representing a value of the function within the one of the channels, the SLI bus being constructed to shift the received data identifying the one of the channels into a channel prefix register, shift the received data identifying the function within the one of the channels into the function register, and shift the received data representing the value of the function within the one of the channels into the data register;
• and
• a digital control and timing circuit coupled between at least one of the one or more LED strings and the SLI bus, the digital control and timing circuit including a preload latch and an active latch and being constructed to copy the data from the data register of the SLI bus to the preload latch at a first rate and copy the data from the preload latch to the active latch at a second rate that is less than the first rate.
