Abstract
Neural outgrowth in the central nervous system is achieved by administering chondroitinase AC and/or chondroitinase B to degrade chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans that inhibit or contribute to the inhibition of nervous tissue regeneration.

A method of treating a mammal having a spinal cord injury comprising administering an effective amount of chondroitinase AC, chondroitinase B, or a mixture thereof to the mammal.
A method of promoting neurite outgrowth in a mammal having a spinal cord injury comprising administering an effective amount of chondroitinase AC, chondroitinase B, or a mixture thereof to the subject.
