Abstract
The present invention is directed to a method for producing a coating having a desired gloss value on a substrate. This invention is also directed to method for producing a predicted gloss value of a coating on a substrate. This invention is further directed to a method of using a matting agent comprising components derived from renewable resources.
Claims21
A method for producing a coating having a target gloss value on a substrate, said coating is formed from a coating composition and a matting agent, said method comprising steps of:
- a) obtaining a gloss-mixing ratio correlation data system that comprises correlations of gloss values to mixing ratios of said matting agent and said coating composition;
- b) generating a target mixing ratio of said matting agent and said coating composition according to said target gloss value and said gloss-mixing ratio correlation data system;
- c) producing a coating mixture comprising said coating composition and said matting agent having said target mixing ratio;
- and
- d) producing said coating by applying said coating mixture over said substrate,
- wherein said gloss-mixing ratio correlation data system is generated by a fitting process comprising the steps of:
- i) producing a first coating mixture comprising said coating composition and said matting went according to a first mixing ratio x1, applying the first coating mixture over a first substrate and allowing the first coating mixture to dry forming a dry first coating, and measuring a first gloss value y1 of the dry first coating;
- ii) producing a second coating mixture comprising said coating composition and said matting agent according to a second mixing ratio x2, applying the second coating mixture over a second substrate and allowing the second coating mixture to dry forming a dry second coating, and measuring a second gloss value y2 of the dry second coating;
- iii) repeating the steps i) and ii) above for subsequent mixing ratios x3 through xn, and measuring subsequent gloss values y3 through yn;
- and
- iv) generating said gloss-mixing ratio correlation data system by fitting the mixing ratios) x1 through xn and the gloss values y1 through yn;
- wherein, n is an integer equal to or greater than 3, and said gloss-mixing ratio correlation data system has a correlation coefficient R2 equal to or greater than 0.7, and
- wherein said gloss-mixing ratio correlation data system is expressed as a 2-degree polynomial fitting equation:
- y=a1x2+a2x+a3 (1)
- wherein is a gloss value, x is a mixing ratio a1, a2 and a3 are constants determined through fitting said mixing ratios x1 through xn and said gloss values y1 through yn.
A method for producing a predicted gloss value of a coating on a substrate, said coating is formed from a coating composition and a matting agent, said method comprising steps of:
- a) obtaining a gloss-mixing ratio correlation data system that comprises correlations of gloss values to mixing ratios of said matting agent and said coating composition;
