Abstract
Systems for extended depth frequency domain optical coherence tomography are provided including a detection system configured to sample spectral elements at substantially equal frequency intervals, wherein a spectral width associated with the sampled spectral elements is not greater than one-half of the frequency interval. Related methods are also provided herein.

An extended depth Fourier Domain OCT (FDOCT) imaging system, the system comprising:
- an optical source having a bandwidth;
- an optical detection system configured to sample a plurality of spectral elements within the bandwidth of the optical source at substantially equal optical frequency intervals, wherein the optical frequency intervals are no greater than about 5.35 GHz and wherein a number of sampled plurality of elements is no less than about 1024;
- a reference arm, a sample arm and an optical combiner configured to couple the reference arm and the sample arm to the optical detection system,
- wherein the FDOCT imaging system provides a spatial domain image within a spatial domain image window;
- wherein the spatial domain image window has a depth in inverse proportion to the optical frequency interval;
- and
- wherein a reference arm path length associated with the reference arm and a sample arm path length associated with the sample arm are configured to set a position of an image of a structure of a sample within the spatial domain image window.
A method of extended depth Fourier Domain OCT (FDOCT) imaging, the method comprising:
- configuring a setting of a Fourier Domain low coherence interferometer such that a combination of a reference path and a sample path places a region of interest within an imaging window of a Fourier Domain imaging system;
- acquiring a frequency domain data set within a spectral bandwidth of an optical source using the Fourier Domain low coherence interferometer;
- processing a spatial domain image from the data set;
- wherein the data set is one of directly sampled at substantially equal optical frequency intervals and re-sampled at substantially equal optical frequency intervals;
- and
- wherein the substantially equal optical frequency intervals are no greater than 10.7 GHz.
A method of extended depth Fourier Domain OCT (FDOCT) imaging, the method comprising:
- configuring a first setting of a Fourier Domain low coherence interferometer such that a combination of a reference path and a sample path place a first region of interest within an imaging window of a Fourier Domain imaging system;
- acquiring a first frequency domain data set within a spectral bandwidth of an optical source using the Fourier Domain low coherence interferometer;
- configuring a second setting of the Fourier Domain low coherence interferometer such that the combination of the reference path and the sample path place a second region of interest within the imaging window of the Fourier Domain imaging system;
- acquiring a second frequency domain data set within the spectral bandwidth of the optical source using the Fourier Domain low coherence interferometer;
- processing a first spatial domain image from the first frequency domain data set and a second spatial domain image from the second frequency domain data set;
- wherein the first and second frequency domain data sets are one of directly sampled at substantially equal optical frequency intervals and re-sampled at substantially equal optical frequency intervals;
- wherein a depth of an image window of the first spatial domain image is in inverse proportion to the substantially equal frequency intervals of the first frequency domain data set and a depth of an image window of the second spatial domain image is in inverse proportion to the substantially equal frequency intervals of the second frequency domain data set;
- wherein the first region of interest is at least partially offset axially from the second region of interest;
- and
- wherein a combined optical depth of the first spatial domain image, the second spatial domain image, and the axial offset between the first and second spatial domain images is no less than 7.0 mm.
A system for extended depth Fourier Domain OCT (FDOCT) imaging, the system comprising:
- an optical source having a bandwidth;
- an optical detection system configured to sample a plurality of spectral elements within the bandwidth of the optical source;
- a reference arm, a sample arm and an optical combiner configured to couple the reference arm and the sample arm to the optical detection system,
- wherein the FDOCT imaging system provides a spatial domain image within a spatial domain image window;
- wherein the spatial domain image window has a depth in inverse proportion to an optical sampling frequency interval;
- and
- wherein a reference arm path length associated with the reference arm and a sample arm path length associated with the sample arm are configured to set a position of an image of a structure of a sample within the spatial domain image window;
- and
- a means for creating one of a single and a composite image having an optical image depth no less than 7.0 mm.
