Abstract
A self-expanding, pseudo-braided device embodying a high expansion ratio and flexibility as well as comformability and improved radial force. The pseudo-braided device is particularly suited for advancement through and deployment within highly tortuous and very distal vasculature. Various forms of the pseudo-braided device are adapted for the repair of aneurysms and stenoses as well as for use in thrombectomies and embolic protection therapy.
Claims24
A method for forming a generally tubular body having a pseudo-braided pattern, comprising:
- winding a single, elongate filament having a first end and a second end about a mandrel in a set rotational direction and in a forward axial direction, the filament being wound about the mandrel to form a helical pattern along a desired length of the mandrel;
- reversing the axial direction of the winding to form a first end reversal at the junction where the filament translates from the forward axial direction to the reverse axial direction;
- after the first reversal is formed, winding the filament in the same rotational direction about the mandrel in the reverse axial direction in a helical pattern;
- as the filament is being wound about the mandrel in the reverse axial direction, interlacing the filament in an over/under fashion about the portion of the filament that is already wound about the mandrel;
- reversing the axial direction of the winding from the reserve axial direction back to the forward axial direction to form a second end reversal at the junction where the filament translates from the reverse axial direction to the forward axial direction;
- after the second reversal is formed, winding the filament in the same rotational direction about the mandrel in the forward axial direction and in a helical pattern;
- as the filament is being wound about the mandrel in the forward axial direction, interlacing the filament in an over/under fashion about a portion of the filament that is already wound about the mandrel;
- and
- joining the first and second ends of the filament together.
