Abstract
Tools capable of improving the accuracy of decision feedback equalization (DFE) are described. The tools may adapt a DFE using a more-equal distribution of signals than those actually received. The tools may do so by disregarding, averaging, or weighting certain signals when adapting the DFE when those signals represent an unequal distribution of bit patterns. In one example, the tools detect and disregard some of the signals representing idle bit patterns that are received more often than other bit patterns. The tools may also or instead compensate for a bit pattern that is never or rarely received.
Claims33
A method comprising:
- receiving signals each of which represents one of multiple possible bit patterns, the multiple possible bit patterns determined based on a protocol of the signals, the signals being received through a channel that causes amplitude loss or interference when the signals pass through the channel;
- determining, for each of the signals, which bit pattern of the multiple possible bit patterns each of the signals represents, the bit patterns of the signals being unequally distributed among the multiple possible bit patterns;
- retaining a record of one or more of the signals based on their respective bit patterns;
- determining, responsive to a pre-set waiting period passing or a pre-set number of the signals being received, that some of the multiple possible bit patterns have not been received;
- determining that waiting for the some of the multiple possible bit patterns to be received has a greater negative consequence than adapting equalizing coefficients using the record prior to receiving the some of the multiple possible bit patterns;
- and
- adapting, responsive to the determination that waiting for the some of the multiple bit patterns has the greater negative consequence, equalizing coefficients using the record and based on a first-received signal for each of the multiple possible bit patterns and ignoring later-received signals for each of the multiple possible bit patterns, the adapted equalizing coefficients capable of correcting, at least in part, the amplitude loss or the interference.
