Handheld electronic device with text disambiguation

A handheld mobile device, comprising:

• an input device configured to receive user input;
• a display device configured to display character sequences in response to the user input;
• a memory configured to store one or more word databases;
• and
• a processor configured to:
• receive an ambiguous input sequence from the input device;
• generate from one or more word databases, a list including one or more disambiguated character sequences on the display device corresponding to the ambiguous input sequence;
• receive a selection input for selecting one of the disambiguated character sequences;
• receive a delimiter input for terminating an input session;
• and
• update the one or more word databases with the selected disambiguated character sequence in response to the delimiter input.

A non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising instructions stored thereon, which, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to perform a method for disambiguating user inputs to a handheld mobile device, the method comprising:

• receiving an ambiguous input sequence from an input device;
• generating, from one or more word databases, a list including one or more disambiguated character sequences on a display device corresponding to the ambiguous input sequence;
• receiving a selection input for selecting one of the disambiguated character sequences;
• receiving a delimiter input for terminating an input session;
• and
• updating the one or more word databases with the selected disambiguated character sequence in response to the delimiter input.
