Abstract
A system for cooling a computer data center includes a computer data center building; a plurality of computer racks arranged in a plurality of linear rows inside the computer data center building, with particular ones of the racks housing a plurality of computer systems; a plurality of cooling fluid conduits; and a plurality of cooling plants arranged outside the computer data center building along an exterior wall of the computer data center building. At least one of the cooling plants corresponds to one or more particular ones of the cooling fluid conduits and provides cooling for the corresponding conduit.

A system for cooling a computer data center, comprising:
- a computer data center building;
- a plurality of computer racks arranged in a plurality of linear rows inside the computer data center building, the linear rows of computer racks arranged in paired parallel rows of racks that are fluidly attached to respective common warm-air capture plenums positioned between the paired parallel rows of racks, with particular ones of the racks housing a plurality of computer systems;
- a plurality of cooling fluid conduits;
- and
- a plurality of cooling plants arranged outside the computer data center building along an exterior wall of the computer data center building, each of the cooling plants corresponding to one or more particular ones of the cooling fluid conduits and providing cooling for the corresponding conduit.

A method for cooling a computer data center, comprising:
- arranging a plurality of linear rows of computer racks in paired parallel rows of racks that are fluidly attached to respective common warm-air capture plenums that are positioned between the paired parallel rows of racks;
- operating computers in the computer racks inside a data center building, with particular ones of the racks housing a plurality of computer systems;
- operating a plurality of cooling plants outside the data center building along an exterior wall of the data center building, each of the cooling plants corresponding to one or more particular ones of the rows of racks;
- and
- circulating cooling fluid through a plurality of cooling fluid conduits that correspond to particular ones of the rows of racks and that are served by particular ones of the cooling plants.

- a computer data center building;

- operating computers in a plurality of computer racks inside a data center building, the plurality of racks arranged in a plurality of linear rows, with particular ones of the racks housing a plurality of computer systems;
- operating a plurality of cooling plants outside the data center building along an exterior wall of the data center building, each of the cooling plants corresponding to one or more particular ones of the rows of racks;
- and
- circulating cooling fluid through a plurality of cooling fluid conduits comprising cooling water pipes, the cooling fluid conduits corresponding to particular ones of the rows of racks and being served by particular ones of the cooling plants.

A method for cooling a computer data center, comprising:
- operating computers in a plurality of computer racks inside a data center building, the plurality of racks arranged in a plurality of linear rows, with particular ones of the racks housing a plurality of computer systems;
- operating a plurality of cooling plants in a chillerless mode outside the data center building along an exterior wall of the data center building, each of the cooling plants corresponding to one or more particular ones of the rows of racks;
- determining that conditions exceed an ability of the cooling plants operating in the chillerless mode to cool the data center building;
- based on the determination, operating the cooling plants with at least one chiller providing a chilled fluid to remove heat generated by at least a portion of the computer systems;
- and
- circulating cooling fluid through a plurality of cooling fluid conduits that correspond to particular ones of the rows of racks and that are served by particular ones of the cooling plants.
