Abstract
An enhanced metadata structure and associated process is provided which captures and stores metadata gathered about the source and usage of a media asset or file. The source and usage metadata is integrated, such as by encoding within the enhanced media file, as the media asset is transferred and used. The integrated metadata accumulates, as a trail of source information and usage information in the enhanced media asset, and can be extracted upon arrival at a target computer system.

A process, comprising the steps of:
- performing a search of audit trail information associated with a media asset, wherein the media asset is sequentially transferred from a first source node of a plurality of nodes to at least one recipient node of the plurality of nodes, wherein the audit trail information is cumulatively integrated within the media asset at the source node and at each of the recipient nodes that act as subsequent source nodes to transfer the media asset to a subsequent recipient node, wherein the audit trail information comprises any of source information or usage information,
- wherein the source information comprises information regarding each of the respective source nodes,
- wherein the usage is associated with respective users at any of the source node or recipient nodes where usage occurs, and
- wherein the usage comprises any of a processing of the media asset, a modification of the media asset, or an addition of information to the media asset;
- and
- locating the media asset, based upon the search.
