Abstract
Plasma-sprayed layers of aluminium oxide on a substrate are produced by using a pyrogenically produced aluminium oxide, for example selected from the group consisting of borosilicate and steel, as starting powder.

Process for producing the plasma-sprayed layer of aluminium oxide on a substrate, where the particles of aluminium oxide in the layer have a size from 20 to 30 nm, comprising spraying a pyrogenically produced aluminium oxide onto a substrate forming a plasma-sprayed layer.
