Liquid crystal display and thin film transistor substrate therefor

A flat panel display, comprising:

• a first panel;
• a second panel;
• and
• a liquid crystal layer interposed between the first panel and the second panel,
• wherein the first panel comprises:
• a substrate having a plurality of pixel areas, each pixel area including a first sub-pixel area and a second sub-pixel area, the first sub-pixel area configured to have a greater electric field than the second sub-pixel area, such that mutual compensation in the two sub-pixel areas decreases distortion of a gamma curve and improves lateral visibility of the flat panel display;
• a plurality of gate lines;
• a data line comprising longitudinal portions perpendicularly crossing over the gate lines, and at least one bent portion disposed between the longitudinal portions;
• a thin film transistor (TFT) formed on the substrate and comprising a gate electrode, a source electrode connected to the data line and a drain electrode;
• a coupling electrode electrically connected to the drain electrode;
• a first sub-pixel electrode formed in the first sub-pixel area and connected to the drain electrode;
• and
• a second sub-pixel electrode formed in the second sub-pixel area, floated and overlapping the coupling electrode to form coupling capacitances with the first sub-pixel electrode,
• wherein at least one of the first sub-pixel electrode and the second sub-pixel electrode have a shape of a bent-band that matches the shape of the pixel areas, and
• the second panel comprises a common electrode having at least one cutout or at least one protrusion, the at least one cutout or at least one protrusion dividing the pixel area into a plurality of sub-areas.
