Abstract
A method and apparatus for detecting motion in a large area with a single imaging device, such as a camera. A fixed object is located in the area and a camera is panned across the area with the fixed object remaining in the field of view of the camera. Successive images are adjusted based on the position of the fixed object within the image and the adjusted images are compared to detect movement with an area of overlap between the images.
Claims16
An apparatus for detecting motion in an area, the apparatus comprising:
- an imaging device having a field of view that is smaller than the area;
- means for moving the field of view to vary the portion of the area that is covered by the field of view;
- means for storing a first set of image data captured by said imaging device when the field of view covers a first portion of the area and for storing a second set of image data captured by said imaging device when the field of view covers a second portion of the area, the second portion including a sub area that overlaps a sub area of the first portion to define an overlapping area;
- means for determining a fixed object image portion in the overlapping area;
- means for adjusting at least one of the first set of image data and the second set of image data based on the fixed object image portion and generating two sets of adjusted image data, each of the two sets of adjusted image data including overlapping area data corresponding to the overlapping area;
- and
- means for comparing the overlapping area data of the two sets of adjusted image data to determine if any objects in the overlapping area have moved.

A method for detecting motion in an area of interest, the method comprising:
- (a) capturing, with an imaging device, first image data in a field of view of the imaging device, the first image data corresponding to a first portion of an area of interest;
- (b) changing, with a panning mechanism, the field of view of the imaging device;
- capturing, with the imaging device, second image data in the field of view of the imaging device, the second image data corresponding to a second portion of the area of interest, the second portion including a sub area that overlaps a sub area of the first portion to define an overlapping area;
- (c) determining a fixed object image portion in the overlapping area;
- (d) adjusting at least one of the first image data and the second image data based on the fixed object image portion and generating two sets of adjusted image data, each of the two sets of adjusted image data including overlapping area data corresponding to the overlapping area;
- and
- (e) after the step of adjusting at least one of the first image data and the second image data, determining if motion has occurred in the overlapping area by comparing the overlapping area data of the two sets of adjusted image data.
