Abstract
The present invention relates to paper substrates containing either an internal starch or a size press applied starch and a boron-containing compound and having improved physical and mechanical properties, as well as methods of making and using the same.
Claims18
A paper or paperboard, comprising
- cellulosic fibers, and
- a sizing or coating composition comprising
- starch;
- and
- a boron-containing compound, wherein
- the amount of boron-containing compound is equal to or less than about 7% by weight of the starch;
- and
- greater than 50% of the starch and boron-containing compound is located at least one surface of the web;
- and wherein at least a portion of the starch and boron-containing compound penetrates the surface of the web.
