Abstract
A method and apparatus for sorting particles moving through a closed channel system of capillary size comprises a bubble valve for selectively generating a pressure pulse to separate a particle having a predetermined characteristic from a stream of particles. The particle sorting system may further include a buffer for absorbing the pressure pulse. The particle sorting system may include a plurality of closely coupled sorting modules which are combined to further increase the sorting rate. The particle sorting system may comprise a multi-stage sorting device for serially sorting streams of particles, in order to decrease the error rate.
Claims16
A microfabricated particle sorting system, comprising:
- a first duct for conveying a stream of suspended particles confined in a carrier liquid, comprising an inlet, a first outlet and a second outlet;
- a sensor for identifying a particle having a predetermined characteristic;
- a sensor for measuring the velocity of a particle having the predetermined characteristic, the sensor for measuring the velocity comprising a gradient optical mask comprising a plurality of bars deposited on a substrate of the system in which the first duct is formed;
- and
- an actuator for selectively applying a pressure pulse to the stream of suspended particles to deflect the particle having the predetermined characteristic from the stream of particles, causing the particle having the predetermined characteristic to flow into the second outlet while particles that do not have said predetermined characteristic flow into the first outlet, wherein the timing of the actuator for operating on each particle is based on the velocity measurement of that respective particle.
A microfabricated particle sorting system, comprising:
- a first duct for conveying a stream of suspended particles confined in a carrier liquid, comprising an inlet, a first outlet and a second outlet;
- a first sensor for sensing a predetermined characteristic in a particle;
- a second sensor for measuring a velocity of a particle, the second sensor including a gradient optical mask comprising a plurality of bars deposited on a substrate of the system in which the first duct is formed;
- an actuator for causing the particle having said predetermined characteristic to flow into the second outlet while particles that do not have said predetermined characteristic flow into the first outlet.
A microfabricated particle sorting system, comprising:
- a first duct for conveying a stream of suspended particles confined in a carrier liquid, comprising an inlet, a first outlet and a second outlet;
- a first sensor for sensing a predetermined characteristic in a particle;
- a second sensor for measuring a velocity of a particle, the second sensor including a gradient optical mask comprising a plurality of bars deposited on a substrate of the system in which the first duct is formed, wherein the bars in the optical mask have different thicknesses along the length of the first duct;
- an actuator for causing the particle having said predetermined characteristic to flow into the second outlet while particles that do not have said predetermined characteristic flow into the first outlet.
A microfabricated particle sorting system, comprising:
- a first duct for conveying a stream of suspended particles confined in a carrier liquid, comprising an inlet, a first outlet and a second outlet;
- a detection region disposed along the first duct for detecting a predetermined characteristic in a particle and a velocity of a particle within the detection region having the predetermined characteristic, wherein the detection region includes a light source for providing illumination for both detecting the predetermined characteristic and measuring the velocity of the particle, a first sensor for sensing the predetermined characteristic in a particle using the illumination and a second sensor comprising a gradient optical mask comprising a plurality of bars deposited along the first duct in the detection region on a substrate of the system in which the first duct is formed for measuring the velocity of a particle using the illumination provided by the light source;
- and
- an actuator for causing the particle having said predetermined characteristic to flow into the second outlet while particles that do not have said predetermined characteristic flow into the first outlet based on signals from the detection region.
