A photovoltaic cell, comprising:
- a first electrode;
- a second electrode;
- and
- between the first electrode and the second electrode:
- a hole injection layer;
- a liquid crystal (LC) material;
- and
- a plurality of particles in electrical contact with the liquid crystal material.

A method for manufacturing a photovoltaic cell, comprising:
- disposing a hole injection material, a plurality of particles, at least some of which comprise a particle surface group associated therewith, and a plurality of liquid crystal (LC) units between first and second electrodes.
