Abstract
Disclosed are 2-bromoaniline or 2-chloroaniline compounds of formula (I): wherein R, R1 and X are as defined. The compounds are useful as intermediates for preparing indole compounds.

A 2-bromoaniline or 2-chloroaniline compound of formula (I);
- wherein:
- X is Br or Cl,
- R is H, C1-8 alkyl, aryl, —C(O)C1-6 alkyl, —C(O)-aryl, —S(O)2C1-6 alkyl or —S(O)aryl;
- R1 is CO2M and M is selected from Na, K, Li, Mg, —CO2C1-6 alkyl, C1-6 alkylHNC(O)—,
