Abstract
The present invention provides a product that includes (a) a wood-based composite panel having a pair of outer surfaces; and (b) a radiant barrier material having a pair of outer surfaces, wherein at least a portion of an outer surface of the radiant barrier material is adhered to at least a portion of an outer surface of the wood-based composite panel; wherein the radiant barrier material that includes apertures such that the apertures are present in about 49 apertures per square inch of radiant barrier material or less, inclusive. The invention also includes methods for manufacturing such product.
Claims120
A product comprising:
- (a) a wood-based composite panel that comprises wood substrates and a first resin, the wood-based composite panel having a pair of outer surfaces;
- and
- (b) a radiant barrier material having a pair of outer surfaces, wherein at least a portion of an outer surface of the radiant barrier material is adhered to at least a portion of an outer surface of the wood-based composite panel employing a second resin, the second resin comprising a polyethylene resin;
- the radiant barrier material comprising a combination of metallic foil and liner board, the liner board having a weight of at least about 25 pounds per thousand square feet, the metallic foil and liner board are adhered to each other with a third resin, the third resin comprising an aqueous polyvinyl acetate;
- wherein the radiant barrier material comprises apertures and the apertures are unplugged thereby creating moisture vapor channels.
A radiant barrier oriented strand board comprising:
- (i) an oriented strand board comprising flakes of wood adhered together with a first resin, the oriented strand board having a pair of outer surfaces;
- (ii) a radiant barrier material having a pair of outer surfaces, wherein at least a portion of an outer surface of the radiant barrier material is adhered to at least a portion of an outer surface of the oriented strand board employing a second resin, the second resin comprising a polyethylene resin;
- the radiant barrier material comprising a combination of metallic foil and liner board, the liner board having a weight of at least about 25 pounds per thousand square feet, the metallic foil and liner board are adhered to each other with a third resin, the third resin comprising an aqueous polyvinyl acetate;
- wherein the radiant barrier material comprises apertures that are unplugged, thereby creating moisture vapor channels.
A radiant barrier oriented strand board comprising:
- (a) a wood-based composite panel that comprises wood substrates and a first resin, the wood-based composite panel having a pair of outer surfaces;
- and
- (b) a radiant barrier material having a pair of outer surfaces, wherein at least a portion of an outer surface of the radiant barrier material is adhered to at least a portion of an outer surface of the wood-based composite panel employing a second resin, the second resin comprising a polyethylene resin;
- wherein the radiant barrier material comprises apertures and the apertures are unplugged thereby creating moisture vapor channels;
- the product prepared by the process comprising the following steps:
- (i) contacting a blanket of substantially oriented flakes of wood, with a radiant barrier material having the apertures located therein;
- wherein the flakes of wood comprise a first resin located on at least a portion of the surface of the flakes of wood;
- wherein the radiant barrier material has a pair of outer surfaces and a second resin located on at least a portion of one side of the pair of outer surfaces of the radiant barrier material, such that the flakes of wood contact the second resin;
- the radiant barrier material comprising a combination of metallic foil and liner board, the liner board having a weight of at least about 25 pounds per thousand square feet, the metallic foil and liner board are adhered to each other with a third resin, the third resin comprising an aqueous polyvinyl acetate;
- and
- (ii) curing the first resin and the second resin by exposing the first resin and the second resin to at least one of an elevated temperature, an elevated pressure, and radiant energy;
- for a sufficient period of time;
- to effectively cure the first resin and the second resin.
