• wherein R1 is an ester group, R2 is NO2, R3 is H, k is 1 q is 1, m is from 6 to 14, n is from 2 to 12, p is 0, r is from 0 to n−1 (but not greater than 3 or −4), s=1 when r=0, s=0 when r≠0, r=0 to 4 when x=0, r=1-4 when x=0 x is 0, and * denotes the position of a chiral carbon.

A mesogenic compound having the formula:

• wherein R1 is an ester group, R2 is NO2, R3 is (CH3)3Si, k is 1, q is 1, m is from 6 to 14, n is from 2 to 12, p is 0, r is from 0 to 4, s=1 when r=0, s=0 when r≠0, x is from 0 to 4, and * denotes the position of a chiral carbon.

A mesogenic compound having the formula:

• wherein R1 is an ester group, R2 is NO2, R3 is CH2═CH, k is 1, q is 1, m is from 6 to 14, n is from 2 to 12, p is 0, r is from 0 to 4, s=1 when r=0, s=0 when r≠0, x is from 0 to 4, and * denotes the position of a chiral carbon.

A mesogenic compound having the formula:

• wherein R1 is an ester group, R2 is NO2, R3 is (CH3)3Si, k is 0, q is 0, m is from 6 to 14, n is from 2 to 12, p is 1, r is from 0 to 4, s=1 when r=0, s=0 when r≠0, x is from 0 to 4, and * denotes the position of a chiral carbon.

A mixture comprising a first mesogenic compound having the formula:

• wherein R1 is an ester group, R2 is NO2, CN, F, or Cl, R3 is H, CH2═CH, or (CH3)3Si, k is 1 or 2, q is 0 or 1, m is from 2 to 16, n is from 2 to 12, p is 0 or 1, when x=0, r=0 to 4, when x=0, r=1 to 4 s=1 when r=0, s=0 when r≠0, x is from 0 to 4, and * denotes the position of a chiral carbon,
• and further comprising a second mesogenic compound, wherein said second mesogenic compound has the formula:
• wherein R1 is an ester group, R2 is NO2, R3 is H, CH2═CH, or (CH3)3Si, k is 1 or 2, q is 0 or 1, m is from 2 to 16, n is from 2 to 12, p is 0 or 1, when x=0, r=0 to 4, when x=0, r=1 to 4 s=1 when r=0, s=0 when r≠0, x is from 0 to 4, and * denotes the position of a chiral carbon and wherein R2, R3, k, q, m, n, p, and x for said second mesogenic compound are selected independently from R2, R3, k, q, m, n, p, and x for said first mesogenic compound.

• wherein R1 is an ester group, R2 is H, NO2, CN, F, or Cl, R3 is (CH3)3Si, k is 1 or 2, q is 0 or 1, m is from 2 to 16, n is from 2 to 12, p is 0 or 1, r is from 0 to 4s=1 when r=0, s=0when r≠0, x is from 0 to 4, and * denotes the position of a chiral carbon.

A mesogenic compound having the formula:
