Disclosed are novel polymers derivatized with at least one —SNO group per 1200 atomic mass unit of the polymer. In one embodiment, the S-nitrosylated polymer has stabilized —S-nitrosyl groups. In another embodiment the S-nitrosylated polymer prepared by polymerizing a compound represented by the following structural formula: R is an organic radical. Each X′ is an independently chosen aliphatic group or substituted aliphatic group. Preferably, each X′ is the same and is a C2-C6 alkylene group, more preferably —CH2—, —CH2CH2—, —CH2CH2CH2— or —CH2CH2CH2CH2—. p and m are independently a positive integer such that p+m is greater than two. The polymers of the present invention can be used to coat medical devices to deliver nitric oxide in vivo to treatment sites.
A polymer comprising at least one —SNO group per 600 amu of the polymer and at least one free alcohol or free thiol group per 600 amu of the polymer, wherein:
A polymer comprising one or more —SNO groups, wherein at least one of the —SNO groups is stabilized by a free thiol group or a free alcohol group.
A polymer prepared by polymerizing a compound represented by the following structural formula:
A method of preparing a polymer comprising stabilized S-nitrosyl groups, said method comprising the step of polymerizing a compound represented by the following structural formula:
An article capable of releasing NO wherein the article is coated with a polymer comprising at least one —SNO group per 600 amu of the polymer and at least one free alcohol or free thiol group per 600 amu of the polymer, wherein:
A method of delivering nitric oxide to a treatment site in a subject or to bodily fluid comprising the steps of:
A method of preparing an article capable of releasing NO, said method comprising coating an article with a polymer comprising at least one —SNO per 600 amu of the polymer and at least one free alcohol or free thiol group per 600 amu of the polymer, wherein:
A polymer prepared by reacting a solution comprising a cyclic polythiolated polysaccharide with a nitrating reagent under conditions suitable for nitrating a free thiol group.
