A polyhydroxystyrene where from 10 to 60 mol % of the hydroxyl groups have been substituted by tert-butoxycarbonyloxy groups.

A process for producing a polyhydroxystyrene having hydroxyl groups partly substituted with alkoxyalkoxy groups, which comprises dissolving a polyhydroxystyrene in an organic polar solvent, and reacting the resultant polyhydroxystyrene with a 1-halogeno-1-alkoxyalkane in the presence of an alkaline catalyst.
