Abstract
A composition of an oil of lubricating viscosity; a polymer, soluble in the lubricant composition and having a number average molecular weight of greater than 50,000; and a combustible solvent in which the remaining components of the lubricant are soluble, provides a composition suitable for lubricating a two-stroke cycle engine. The lubricant composition provides good lubricity with low smoke generation.
Claims52
A lubricant composition suitable for lubricating a two-stroke cycle engine, comprising:
- (a) an oil of lubricating viscosity;
- (b) about 0.2 to about 10 percent by weight of a polymer, soluble in said lubricant composition, having a number average molecular weight of greater than 50,000;
- (c) 0 to about 10 percent by weight of an olefin polymer having a number average molecular weight of up to 500;
- and
- (d) about 10 to about 95 percent by weight of a combustible solvent other than oil of lubricating viscosity, having a flash point of less than about 105.degree. C., in which the remaining components of the lubricant are soluble.
A method for lubricating a two-stroke cycle engine, comprising supplying to the engine a lubricant composition comprising:
- (a) an oil of lubricating viscosity;
- (b) about 0.2 to about 10 percent by weight of a polymer, soluble in said lubricant composition, having a number average molecular weight of greater than 50,000;
- (c) 0 to about 10 percent by weight of an olefin polymer having a number average molecular weight of up to 500;
- and
- (d) about 10 to about 95 percent by weight of a combustible solvent other than oil of lubricating viscosity, having a flash point of less than about 105.degree. C., in which the remaining components of the lubricant are soluble.
