A method for augmenting new blood vessel formation in a patient in need of augmenting healing tissue injury, comprising administering an effective amount of an alk-1-enyl glycerol derivative having the formula:

##STR15## wherein n is 0-23 and X and Y each is H or an acyl group having from 2 to 26 carbon atoms.
