Abstract
A technique is described for the preparation of conjugated arylene and heteroarylene vinylene polymers wherein conversion of the polymer precursor is effected at a temperature ranging from 150.degree.-300.degree. C. in the presence of forming gas. Studies have shown that the presence of the forming gas suppresses the formation of carbonyl groups, so resulting in an enhancement in photoluminescence and electroluminescence efficiency of the polymer.
Claims10
Method for the preparation of conjugated arylene and heteroarylene vinylene polymers which comprises thermal conversion of a precursor polymer of the general formula ##STR4## wherein R.sub.1 is selected from the group consisting of benzene, substituted benzene, anthracene, naphthalene and alkyl substituted benzene, and a five member cyclic heterocarbon,
- R.sub.2 and R.sub.4 are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and phenyl groups, and
- R.sub.3 is an organic group capable of being eliminated at elevated temperatures to form a double bond, or an OR.sub.5 group wherein R.sub.5 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and methyl groups, conversion being effected at a temperature ranging from 150.degree.-300.degree. C. in the presence of forming gas.
