Abstract
A novel mammalian cytokine, IL-11, and processes for producing it are disclosed. IL-11 may be used in pharmaceutical preparations for stimulating and/or enhancing cells involved in the immune response and cells involved in the proper functioning of the hematopoietic system.

An isolated IL-11 having the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO:
- 2 and having one or more of the following characteristics:
- (1) an apparent molecular weight under reducing conditions on SDS PAGE of approximately 20 kd;
- (2) a calculated molecular weight of approximately 20 kd;
- (3) biological activity in a T1165 assay;
- (4) biological activity in a megakaryocyte colony forming assay in the presence of IL-3;
- (5) biological activity on a B cell plaque forming assay.
