Abstract
This invention provides a high polymer having the following repeating unit (I), a diene compound which is represented by the following formula (II) and is a raw material of the high polymer: ##STR1## and a ferroelectric liquid-crystalline composition containing the high polymer and a low molecular weight smectic liquid-crystalline compound. The ferroelectric liquid-crystalline composition is easy to orient and exhibits a fast response against applied electric field.

A novel high polymer comprising the repeating unit (I) represented by the following formula ##STR75## wherein each of m and n is an integer of 2 to 5, p is an integer of 1 or 2, a is an integer of 4 to 20, b is an integer of 0 to 3, c is an integer of 1 to 7, * represents an asymmetric carbon atom, and Y is ##STR76## k being a number of 1 to 13 and j is an integer of 1 to 4.
A diene compound having a structure represented by the following formula (II) ##STR81## wherein each of m and n is an integer of 2 to 5, p is an integer of 1 or 2, a is an integer of 4 to 20, b is an integer of 0 to 3, c is an integer of 1 to 7 and * represents an asymmetric carbon atom.
