A composition for controlling the deposition of scale imparting species on the structural surfaces of steam generating systems comprising the use of a water soluble polymer having the structure ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is H or lower (C.sub.1 14 C.sub.4) alkyl, R.sub.2 is (CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2 --O).sub.n, ##STR2## or a mixture of both, and n is an integer of from about 1 to about 40, R.sub.3 is H, lower (C.sub.1-C.sub.4) alkyl or an acetate. This polymer may also be used in concert with topping agents such as phosphoric acids, phosphonic acids, amines, metal chelating agents and oxygen scavengers.
A composition comprised of (a) a water soluble polymer having the structure ##STR9## wherein R.sub.1 is H or lower (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4) alkyl, R.sub.2 is (CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2 --O).sub.n, ##STR10## or a mixture of both, n is an integer of from about 1 to about 40, R.sub.3 is H, lower (C.sub.1- C.sub.4) alkyl or an acetate, R.sub.4 is H or COOM, R.sub.5 is H or lower (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4) alkyl, M is H or a water soluble cation, "c is from 0-95 molar percent, d is from 100-4 molar percent with the proviso that c and d add up to 100 percent" and (b) at least one topping agent selected from the group consisting of morpholine, cyclohexylamine, piperazine, ammonia, diethylaminoethanol, dimethylisopropanolamine, and diethylhydroxylamine.
