Method of making pillared hydrotalcites and associated products

A method for intercalating anions into a compound having the formula A.sub.6 B.sub.2 (OH).sub.16 [C].sub.z .multidot.4H.sub.2 O wherein A is selected from the group consisting of Mg.sup.2+, Ni.sup.2+, Fe.sup.2+ and Zn.sup.2+ ;

• B is selected from the group consisting of Al.sup.3+, Fe.sup.3+ and Cr.sup.3+ ;
• and C is selected from the group consisting of OH.sup.-, Cl.sup.-, Br.sup.-, NO.sub.3.sup.-, CH.sub.3 COO.sup.-, CO.sub.3.sup.2-, SO.sub.4.sup.2-, PO.sub.4.sup.3-, Fe(CN).sub.6.sup.3- and Fe(CN).sub.6.sup.4- ;
• and 1/2.ltoreq.z.ltoreq.2, said method comprising:
• (a) heating the compound to one or more temperatures between about 400.degree.-800.degree. C. (752.degree.-1472.degree. F.) for at least about 20 minutes
• (b) combining said heated compound with an anionic salt solution to form a pillared hydrotalcite containing said an ion;
• and
• (c) separating said pillared hydrotalcite from the solution.

A method for intercalating one or more inorganic anions selected from the group consisting of Cr.sub.2 O.sub.7.sup.2-, Mo.sub.7 O.sub.24.sup.6-, SiO.sub.3.sup.2-, VO.sub.3.sup.- and WO.sub.4.sup.2- into a compound having the structure of a hydrotalcite to produce a pillared derivative of said compound having brucite layers and having an X-ray diffraction [d(001)] value of between about seven to twelve Angstroms (7 .ANG.-12 .ANG.) for the distance between the brucite layers, said method comprising:

• (a) providing the compound having the structure of a hydrotalcite in an activated calcined form;
• (b) combining said activated calcined compound with a salt solution of said inorganic anion to produce said pillared derivative;
• and
• (c) separating said pillared derivative from said salt solution.
