Abstract
A new antitumor antibiotic designated BMY-41219 is produced by fermentation of Saccharothrix aerocolonigenes ATCC 39243. The BMY-41219 antibiotic exhibits antitumor activity.

A process for producing the compound of the formula:
- ##STR5## or a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt thereof, which comprises cultivating a rebeccamycin-producing strain of Saccharothrix aerocolonigenes in an aqueous nutrient medium in the presence of tryptophan, until a substantial amount of said compound is produced by said organism in said culture medium and recovering said compound from the culture medium in a substantially pure form.
