Abstract
Fuel motor compositions and lubricant compositions contain small amounts of one or more polybutyl or polyisobutyl alcohols of the formula (I) R--CH.sub.2 --OH (I) where R is a polybutyl or polyisobutyl radical derived from isobutene and up to 20% by weight of n-butene, or a corresponding (poly)alkoxylate or a corresponding carboxylate of the polybutyl or polyisobutyl alcohol. These additives reduce deposition at the valves of piston engines.

A motor fuel composition which contains 0.005 to 0.5% by weight of one or more polybutyl or polyisobutyl alcohols of the formula (I)
- R--CH.sub.2 --OH (I)
- where R is a polybutyl or polyisobutyl radical derived from isobutene and up to 20% by weight of n-butene and having a molecular weight M.sub.N of from 324 to 3,000, or a corresponding (poly)alkoxylate or a corresponding carboxylate of the polybutyl or polyisobutyl alcohol, wherein said polybutyl or polyisobutyl alcohol is prepared by hydroformylating the corresponding polybutene or polyisobutene using a rhodium or cobalt catalyst at from 80.degree. to 200.degree. C. under a CO/H.sub.2 pressure of up to 600 bar.
