Abstract
Crystalline layered sodium silicates having the composition NaMSi.sub.x O.sub.2x+1.y H.sub.2 O, in which M denotes sodium or hydrogen, x is a number from 1.9 to 4 and y is a number from 0 to 20, are used for softening water containing calcium and/or magnesium ions.

In a washing and cleaning composition containing effective amounts of surfactant and builder the improvement wherein said builder comprises a crystalline layered sodium silicate having the composition NaMSi.sub.x O.sub.2x+1.yH.sub.2 O, in which M denotes sodium or hydrogen, x is a number from 1.9 to 4 and y is a number from 0 to 20.
A washing and cleaning composition comprising a surfactant and a detergent builder, wherein at least one of the builders therefor, is a crystalline layered sodium silicate having the composition NaMSi.sub.x O.sub.2x+1.yH.sub.2 O, in which M denotes sodium or hydrogen, x is a number from 1.9 to 4, and y is a number from 0 to 20.
