Abstract
An improved process for preparing a phosphated metal surface for painting comprises electrolyzing the surface as cathode in an aqueous solution containing hexavalent and trivalent chromium in specified concentrations and weight ratios.

A process for the post-treatment of a phosphated metal surface prior to painting comprising immersing the surface as cathode in an aqueous chromating solution containing 0.05-10 g/l of hexavalent chromium and having a weight ratio of Cr.sup.3+ /Cr.sup.6+ of less than 1.0.
