Abstract
An adhesive laminate, including a base web having a coating of pressure-sensitive adhesive and a backing removably adhered to the coating of adhesive for protecting and containing the adhesive, is described. The backing has one or more non-linear, discontinuous score lines formed, preferably, with a laser. A sine-wave, geometric pattern is also preferred. The non-linear, discontinuous score line enables a crack-and-peel feature to be introduced to the laminate backing.
Claims12
A method of scoring the backing of a laminate comprising a base web having a coating of a pressure-sensitive adhesive on at least one major surface thereof, said backing covering and being removably adhered to the coating of the pressure-sensitive adhesive to provide crackability and pull-across to the backing, which comprises forming on the backing at least one edge-to-edge, non-linear, discontinuous score line having a wavelength of from about 0.5 to about 6 inches and an amplitude of from about 0.03 to about 1 inch, said score line formed of a series of scored segments of from about 0.01 to about 0.5 inch in length and a depth of at least 80 percent of the thickness of the backing, the scored segments being separated by unscored segments having a length of from about 0.005 to about 0.06 inch.
A method for forming at least one score line in the backing of an adhesive laminate to impart both crackability and pull-across to the backing, the adhesive laminate comprising a base web, a coating of pressure-sensitive adhesive on the base web, and a removable backing adhered to the pressure-sensitive adhesive for protecting and containing the pressure-sensitive adhesive, the method comprising the steps of:
- (a) generating at least one concentrated beam of radiation of sufficient energy density to vaporize at least a portion of the backing;
- (b) focussing said beam to a spot of from about 0.002 to about 0.02 inch in diameter, on a surface of the backing;
- (c) imparting relative motion to said beam and the adhesive laminate at a relative velocity such that the beam of radiation vaporizes at least a portion of the backing for forming at least one non-linear, discontinuous score line along the backing having a wavelength of from about 0.5 to 6 inches and an amplitude of from about 0.03 to about 0.5 inch;
- and
- (d) pulsing the beam of radiation to form along the score line a series of scored segments having a length of from about 0.01 to about 0.5 inch, a width of from about 0.002 to about 0.06 inch, and a depth of at least 80 percent of the thickness of the backing, the scored segments being separated by unscored segments having a length of from about 0.005 to about 0.06 inch.
A method for forming a plurality of score lines in the backing of an adhesive laminate to impart both crackability and pull-across to the backing, the adhesive laminate comprising a base web, a coating of pressure-sensitive adhesive on the base web and a removable backing adhered to the pressure-sensitive adhesive for protecting and containing the pressure-sensitive adhesive, the method comprising the steps of:
- (a) generating a plurality of concentrated beams of radiation of sufficient energy density to vaporize at least a portion of the backing;
- (b) focussing said beams to a spot of from about 0.002 to about 0.02 inch in diameter, on a surface of the backing such that the beams are spaced apart from one another;
- (c) imparting relative motion to said beams and the adhesive laminate at a relative velocity such that the beams of radiation vaporize at least a portion of the backing for forming a plurality of spaced-apart, non-linear, discontinuous score line along the backing, each having a wavelength of from about 0.5 to about 6 inches and an amplitude of from about 0.03 to about 0.5 inch;
- and
- (d) pulsing said plurality of beams of radiation to form along the score line a series of scored segments, each having a length of from about 0.01 to about 0.5 inch, a width of from about 0.002 to about 0.06 inch, and a depth of at least 80 percent of the thickness of the backing, the scored segments being separated by unscored segments, each having a length of from about 0.005 to about 0.06 inch.
- (a) generating a plurality of concentrated beams of radiation of sufficient energy density to vaporize at least a portion of the backing;
- (b) focussing said beams to a spot of from about 0.002 to about 0.02 inch in diameter, on a surface of the backing such that the beams are spaced apart from one another;
- (c) imparting relative motion to said beams and the adhesive laminate at a relative velocity such that the beams of radiation vaporize at least a portion of the backing for forming a plurality of spaced-apart, sine-wave score lines along the backing, each having a wavelength of from about 0.5 to about 6 inches and an amplitude of from about 0.03 to about 0.5 inch;
- and
- (d) pulsing said plurality of beams of radiation to form along the sine-wave score lines a series of scored segments, each having a length of from about 0.01 to about 0.5 inch, a width of from about 0.002 to about 0.06 inch, and a depth of at least 80 percent of the thickness of the backing, the scored segments being separated by unscored segments, each having a length of from about 0.005 to about 0.06 inch.
