Abstract
Ranitidine is prepared by reacting a compound of formula (II) ##STR1## with aziridine. The reaction may be carried out in the absence of a solvent or preferably in the presence of a solvent such as water or an alkanol at elevated temperature.

A process for the preparation of ranitidine of formula (I) ##STR6## which comprises reacting a compound of formula (II) ##STR7## with aziridine.
A process as claimed in claim 3 in which the solvent is water or an alkanol.
The compound 1-[[5-[(dimethylamino)methyl]-2-furanylmethyl]thio]-N-methyl-2-nitroethena mine of formula (II) ##STR8##
