Tetrahalophthalates as flame retardant plasticizers for halogenated resins

The process of smoke and flame retarding and plasticizing halogenated resins comprising adding to a halogenated resin, 1 to 100 parts per hundred parts of resin of a plasticizer of the structure:

• ##STR17## wherein (a) the ring can have all possible isomeric arrangements;
• (b) R is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, an alkyl of 1 to 10 carbons, and polyhydroxyalkyl of 3 to 10 carbons;
• (c) R.sup.1 is selected from the group consisting of a hydrogen, an alkyl or a substituted alkyl of 1 to 12 carbons, or ##STR18## (d) R.sup.2 is independently selected from the class consisting of H and CH.sub.3 --;
• (e) p is an integer of 4 to 50;
• (f) x is selected from O or NH;
• and
• (g) A is selected from Cl or Br so as to form a uniform composition.
