A method and apparatus for operating a dual-frequency gas laser so as to controllably switch between frequencies makes use of a cavity so tuned that the comb of resonant frequencies is not commensurate with the frequency difference between the laser operating frequencies, and, in a preferred embodiment, with one of the resonant frequencies tuned to coincide with one of the operating frequencies. The cavity length and overall gain at each frequency are so selected that the spacing between resonant frequencies is greater than the breadth above unity gain of the individual peaks of the gain vs. frequency curve. The active material is subjected to a magnetic field which may be varied in a controlled manner. In a preferred embodiment, this field is applied normal to the optical axis of the resonant cavity, and an optical element within the cavity is arranged to act as a plane polarizer with its plane of polarization normal to the magnetic field.
In a laser oscillator having a resonant optical cavity including an optical axis, at least a portion of said cavity containing an active gaseous material capable of supporting laser action over a first limited frequency range and a second limited frequency range remote from one another and centered respectively at a first center frequency and a second center frequency, said cavity being tuned such that simultaneously (a) adjacent resonant frequencies thereof are spaced apart by a frequency spacing which has a magnitude at least of the order of one of said limited frequency ranges, (b) the difference in frequency between said first center frequency and said second center frequency is a non-integral multiple of said frequency spacing, and (c) one of said resonant frequencies substantially coincides with said first center frequency;
A laser oscillator comprising in combination:
A method for controlling the output of a laser oscillator including a resonant optical cavity having an optical axis, at least a portion of said cavity containing an active gaseous material capable of supporting laser action over a first limited frequency range and a second limited frequency range remote from one another and centered respectively at a first center frequency and a second center frequency, said method comprising the steps of:
