Abstract
A flowmeter for the measurement of fluid flow employs a combination of two transit times for the passage of charged particles through a known distance under different conditions. Applications include the measurement of the air-fuel mixture in automobile engines.

An apparatus for measuring the flux of a fluid flowing along an axis through a defined region comprising:
- (a) ion means for producing a concentration of ions distributed in said fluid and for varying said ion concentration to produce upstream and downstream ion concentration changes in said fluid in the upstream and downstream directions;
- (b) a plurality of planar fluid-permeable electrodes oriented substantially perpendicular to said fluid flow and disposed along the axis of said flow region at predetermined positions;
- (c) voltage means for applying a first potential between said ion producing means and a first pair of upstream and downstream fluid-permeable electrodes, the magnitude of said first potential being such that ions in said upstream ion concentration change are attracted from said ion producing means upstream through said fluid in the presence of flow;
