Abstract
This invention relates to 18 .alpha.-glycyrrhizinic acid having the structural formula, ##STR1## and salts thereof as well as a method for the production thereof.

18 .alpha.-glycyrrhizinic acid having the structural formula, ##STR6## and salts thereof.
A glycyrrhizin composition comprising 30 to 98 mole % of 18 .alpha.-glycyrrhizinic acid or its salt and 70 to 2 mole % of 18 .beta.-glycyrrhizinic acid having the structural formula, ##STR7## or its salt, wherein the 2.0 wt % aqueous solution of said composition at 20.degree. C. and pH of 5.0 has a viscosity not higher than 3 centipoises.
