Methods, controllers, and machine-readable storage media for automated commissioning of equipment

A method of commissioning a device connected to a controller in a physical space, the method comprising:

• storing a system model that specifies, for the device:
• a wiring position assigning each wire of the device to a respective connector of the controller;
• a wiring protocol;
• an expected functional behavior;
• and an expected response of a space sensor in the physical space to the expected functional behavior;
• performing a wiring-position check that determines whether each wire of the device is connected at the connector assigned by the system model;
• performing a protocol check that determines whether signaling on the wires of the device conforms to the wiring protocol;
• performing a functional check that operates the device and determines whether the space sensor exhibits the expected response;
• when the functional check determines that the space sensor does not exhibit the expected response, classifying the device by comparing a value reported by the space sensor to a value reported by at least one additional sensor whose expected relationship to the space sensor is defined by the system model based on a relative location of the space sensor and the additional sensor and at least one physical feature of the physical space located between them;
• classifying the device as failed, and attributing the failure to an identified one of the device, the space sensor, and the physical space, when the comparing identifies said one;
• and classifying the device as requiring manual interpretation when the comparing does not identify said one;
• and
• recording a commissioning result for the device that indicates the classification.

A machine-readable storage medium encoded with instructions for execution by a processor of a controller, the medium comprising:

• instructions for storing a system model that specifies, for a device, a wiring position assigning each wire of the device to a respective connector of the controller, a wiring protocol, an expected functional behavior, and an expected response of a space sensor to the expected functional behavior;
• instructions for performing a wiring-position check that determines whether each wire of the device is connected at the connector assigned by the system model, a protocol check that determines whether signaling on the wires of the device conforms to the wiring protocol, and a functional check that operates the device and determines whether the space sensor exhibits the expected response;
• instructions for, when the space sensor does not exhibit the expected response, classifying the device by comparing a value reported by the space sensor to a value reported by at least one additional sensor whose expected relationship to the space sensor is defined by the system model based on a relative location of the space sensor and the additional sensor and at least one physical feature of the physical space located between them, classifying the device as failed and attributing the failure to an identified one of the device, the space sensor, and the physical space when the comparing identifies said one, and otherwise classifying the device as requiring manual interpretation;
• and
• instructions for recording a commissioning result indicating the classification.
