Smoothing of passthrough frame sequences in video see-through (vst) extended reality (xr) or other applications

A method comprising:

• obtaining, using at least one processing device of an electronic device, a sequence of image frames;
• determining, using the at least one processing device, one or more color differences and one or more luminance differences for each of one or more overlapping areas between at least one pair of consecutive image frames in the sequence;
• generating, using the at least one processing device, one or more parameters for a color matching model based on the one or more color differences;
• generating, using the at least one processing device, one or more parameters for a luminance matching model based on the one or more luminance differences;
• and
• applying, using the at least one processing device, the color matching model and the luminance matching model to at least one of the image frames to generate at least one color-matched and luminance-matched image frame.

A non-transitory machine readable medium containing instructions that when executed causes at least one processor of an electronic device to:

• obtain a sequence of image frames;
• determine one or more color differences and one or more luminance differences for each of one or more overlapping areas between at least one pair of consecutive image frames in the sequence;
• generate one or more parameters for a color matching model based on the one or more color differences;
• generate one or more parameters for a luminance matching model based on the one or more luminance differences;
• and
• apply the color matching model and the luminance matching model to at least one of the image frames to generate at least one color-matched and luminance-matched image frame.
